90-10This is a phrase I used in a workshop last week and it resonated with many in my audience. They said it spoke to their feelings about things they experienced as recipients in the realm of social media. Basically, they did not like being sold to! Who does? The conclusion successfully drawn was to not do that to their own followers.

There are general guidelines for the amount of selling propositions 80/20 is good, better yet is 90/10.  90% help, great information, relevant content and expert status, 10% selling.  This is SOCIAL media people, it’s about being social and making connections first. Then and only then should you consider laying out your pitch and then only to your target audience. If you scatter shot your message and repeatedly fire your selling weapon, your efforts will not only be wasted but most likely turn people off. Why would you shot yourself in the foot that way?
