What is going on with WordPress and all this Gutenberg kerfuffle?
Gutenberg for now is a new content editor, a new way to build posts and pages with blocks. Its being described as access to non-coders to digital design, easier to use, more flexible and much better for integrating different types of content. It will also have the ability for you to save any blocks you make that you want to use elsewhere. This will be valuable to ensure consistency of design throughout a site.
The “Blocks” aspect of Gutenberg will bring you the power of “digital design” like an online magazine. Some of the things you’ll be able to do easily with Gutenberg:
- Stylized headers
- Pull quotes
- Choice of 2-4 responsive columns
- Flexible image styles
- Functional buttons
- Easy tables
- Clickable table of contents
- Drop Caps

Later iterations of Gutenberg are going to bring more/better. There are plans for page templates in the next phase with a view to a full site builder in the long term.
If you run your own site make sure to install and activate the “Classic Editor” plugin this will give you best chance to not screw up once the site is updated to WP version 5.0 then you have time to look at the new layout and tools. It’ll take a bit of time & brain power, just remember to breathe until you get used to using it.
If you Hosted or Managed by Jay Designs know that the Classic Editor plugin is already installed and activated on your site. This will effectively turn off the new editor layout for the time being until theme and plugin developers have had the opportunity to fully update and test their code. Your site should’t be affected and WordPress can be safely updated for security purposes.
